Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that provides financial support to men and women in the construction industry who are living with life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors multiple recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was thrilled to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil suffered a major stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the stroke left his left leg seriously impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors feared that he would ultimately end up confined to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, causing financial tension on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. They became optimistic when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, an apparatus that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help someone with foot drop walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila would not be able to afford the equipment in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be needed so he could figure out how to use it.

Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the generous grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
